Culinary question

I have this really wonderfully uber-sharp antique carving set, that of course came out for carving the Thanksgiving turkey yesterday.

But I suffer from CID (Culinary Ignorance Disorder).  I know how to run the knife, and I know how to run the fork, but... my question for all of you is this:
What is that little flippy thing on the fork for?
Surely someone out there in the infinite stretches of the Internet knows, and will save me from the heartbreak of CID.

Thanks to Shaneus (see comments below), we have closure on this pressing issue:  This is a guard for your hand to protect from knife slips during carving.  This is shown by this contemporaneous advertisement:

It is a built-in stand to keep your table cloth clean! It also keeps the meat from sliding too far up the fork.

Thanks for the response GalleySwap... I'd surmised that too. But if that was its purpose, it seems poorly designed for it. You'd have to reach up into the part of the fork that touches the food, between the tines to flip the feet down. I have also wondered if it was some kind of holder, for serving a freshly sliced piece of meat, but that doesn't seem quite right either. These guys on a machinists forum don't seem to have a definitive answer either...

It is actually a spring loaded guard to keep you from cutting your fingers. I only found this out by reading a very old sales flyer being sold on another site. I was looking up the answer as I was at an estate sale and they had four of them... But, they were spring loaded to keep the "stand" up against the fork. The premise of it being a stand made no sense... The flyer cleared it up for me...

Check out the website and do a search for 'fork' to see the flyer:

Thanks Shaneaus!

Mine is set up with a bistable spring - it will stay either in the folded position or the open position.

Mystery solved!
